The funeral of Kevin Elliott, a British private killed in an ambush in Afghanistan, took place in Dundee in September 2009. Elliott, 24, served with the Black Watch and was killed while on deployment in Helmand province during fighting with the Taliban.
As his coffin was carried into St Mary’s Church, one figure in the crowd stood out. Elliott’s best friend, Barry Delaney, wore a tight lime green dress and bright socks. Years earlier, the two friends had made a pact that if one of them was killed in action, the other would wear a dress to the funeral. It was Elliott’s idea, meant half as a joke and half as a test of loyalty.
Delaney followed through without hesitation. He later said he never considered what others might think. The promise mattered more.
As rifle shots rang out at the graveside and Elliott was laid to rest, Delaney collapsed in grief, having kept the final agreement he ever made with his friend.
