Who really designed the US flag? While the story goes that Betsy Ross was responsible for assisting George Washington with the finalization of the design, historians believe that it was in fact created by Francis Hopkinson, who also designed the Great Seal. June 14, Flag Day, commemorates when the design for the first flag was approved in the US.
There have been 27 versions of the flag, and for many years the official design was actually not standardized and could vary by flag maker. President William Howard Taft standardized the stars into rows of eight in 1912. The current version of the flag dates to 1960, the year after Hawaii became the 50th state.
