Two Detroit Police Department officers have been suspended after contacting U.S. Customs and Border Patrol during separate traffic stops — a move that the city’s top police chief says violated department policy. Authorities said the calls went beyond routine procedure because Detroit’s police are not authorized to enforce federal immigration laws.
The incidents came during traffic stops where officers reached out to Border Patrol agents, who later detained the motorists on immigration-related grounds. Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison had initially pushed to fire the officers, saying immigration enforcement “is not our lane,” and that the department’s longstanding policy forbids such contact without proper authorization.
The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners later voted on disciplinary action, ultimately opting to suspend the officers 30 days without pay rather than terminate them. Bettison said he supports the board’s decision but emphasized that officers must follow established policies meant to protect both police and the community.
Public records also suggest that similar contacts between Detroit police and federal immigration agents have occurred before, raising questions about how often local officers collaborate with Border Patrol despite official policy discouraging such cooperation.

Anyway, probably the number one reason I do wear a hat all the time is simply that the vast majority of people who do know me wouldn't recognize me without the hat. That's how ubiquitous it's become. And that's why I own about 50 of 'em. Juss' sayin'...
