The old brick road...

The Dixie Highway was a massive project that brought together private industry and state governments to create a network of paved roads from Chicago to South Florida. The leader was Carl G. Fisher, who had previously created the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (‘The Old Brickyard’). The network connected 10 states with more than 5,000 miles of paved road.
The Old Dixie Highway was once a vital transportation artery, connecting towns and communities across Florida in the early 20th century.
This two-lane road, which predates the famous U.S. Route 1, played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s development. It facilitated trade, tourism, and the movement of people in an era when automobiles were just beginning to revolutionize travel.

  2. Back in the late 60's a friend and I use to go exploring around central Florida. We once found the remnants of a brink highway/road not far off paralleling Highway 441. This was in the Kissimmee/St. Cloud area. We would drive down the brick road. Run up against what was left of an impassable wooden bridge. Back track, get back on 441, go south some more. Take a turnoff and find the bricks again. Drive down until the next dilapidated wooden bridge. Turn around and repeat what we just did. This happened 3 or 4 times. Eventually we got tired of doing this and went off to some other adventure. Also, in the 50's to early 60's my dad would drive us to North Carolina. To visit relatives, he used the Wood Pecker Trail for a lot of the route.

Hold my beer - a NY Dem just said something that almost made sense...

It’s a real power play. Gov. Hochul wants AI and other computer data centers that devour huge amounts of energy to pay more for electricity ...
