Americans spent an average of $898 per adult on alcohol in 2024, with wide variation by state. Alaska tops the ranking, driven by geographic isolation, climate, and limited healthcare access.
Alcohol consumption patterns in the U.S. vary sharply depending on where people live. Cultural norms, climate, income levels, and access to services all shape how much residents spend on alcoholic beverages. This visualization maps alcohol spending per adult across all 50 states.
Alaska Leads by a Wide Margin. Alaska ranks first, with adults spending nearly $1,250 on alcohol in 2024. The state’s top position is often linked to isolation, harsh weather conditions, and limited access to healthcare and addiction services. Higher prices due to transportation costs also push up total spending.

The alcohol tax in the State of Washington is so high I don't know how people can afford to drink. A Tesla usta be THE status symbol. Today a shopping cart fulla booze at Costco is THE status symbol.
ReplyDeleteAbout 40 years ago, I took 6000 gallons of 180 proof alcohol to a popular cough syrup company in Warminster PA. The invoice for the alcohol was $3000. The Pennsylvania tax stamp for that 6000 gallons was $120,000.
DeleteI know making their own had something to do with the low number in Georgia?
ReplyDeleteThe $$$$ amount doesn't really matter.
ReplyDeleteSome people buy gallons for the same amount of money somebody else pays for a single bottle.
Like the 20+ empty one gallon bottles me and my two little boys cleaned out of their mother's bedroom the last time we saw her.
I'll wager a guess Utahans shop in Wyoming, Colorado, and Nevada for variety, costs, and not being seen by neighbors.
ReplyDeleteYes...yes I can. The taxes on alcohol up here are stupidly high. In the few bush villages where you're allowed to have it, shipping is by air. Figure $25-30 for a case of the cheap beer, at least that to ship it, plus whatever additional fees the village adds on to get their cut. A 12 pack of decent beer averages out to around $22. The average price for a draft at any of our local places is around $5-7, mixed will run $8-10. The crafty places, the local distilleries and restauraunts are more expensive. Don't get me started on tobacco taxes. https://www.salestaxhandbook.com/alaska/alcohol
ReplyDeleteWith my spending, I don't know why GA isn't higher...
ReplyDeleteFunny, they didn't include DC. Or is that because the taxpayers buy it for them?
ReplyDeleteAre shipping charges part of the cost in Alaska?
ReplyDeleteI probably haven't spent that much on booze in 10 years (PA). I keep telling my wife I'm booze deprived.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't count DC. Nanny Botox alone drinks as much as WV.
ReplyDeleteGawd. What do they do for fun in West Virginia?
