You know, of course, that the close-to-the-TV thing got started for the very good reason that early color TVs used CRT accelerating voltages in the 25 kilovolt range, which generated radiation when the electron beam hit the phosphors. But the concern wasn't for the eyes, just general radiation exposure. For what it's worth, this was only true for a few years, then they figured out how to get by with far lower voltages and the radiation problem went away -- but the rule was well and truly (and erroneously) planted in the minds of the general public.
