Something to look forward to before Christmas? Not the weather, that's fer sure. Damn...

From the Midwest to the East Coast temperatures will be about 15 to 20 degrees below the December average beginning in about the third week of the month, MIT climatologist Judah Cohen predicted. In New York City, temperatures are typically about 37 degrees Fahrenheit in mid-December – meaning the city could experience sustained colds in the low 20s to teens. “My thinking is that the cold the first week of December is the appetizer and the main course will be in mid-December,” Cohen told USA Today.

  2. Have to leave 60º+ weather in the Lowcountry for Burlington, NC, where it'll only be 50 or so. Too cold too early.

    1. I was stationed at Minot AFB 1974-1978. Minus forty was not uncommon between Dec-March, and that's not wind-chill, that's true air temperature. I remember one night out on Missile Alert when it got so cold, SAC HQ grounded the bomber wing. Missile Crews got a lot of free beers from the flyboys that weekend!

  4. Hate to have to endure the heat at the other end of the Vortex… you know, the thing that justifies freezing temps when we’re in the middle of the existential threat of global warming. (My theory is the Vortex also sucks up all the water from the shrinking icecaps ‘cos I live by the ocean which hasn’t risen an inch in the last 50 years)

  6. yeah, the good thing about cold weather is that it does drive the "Yuppies" down to FLA. a lot of people from NYC and NJ sell their homes and move to peaceful quiet hills of PA. then the weather drops to single digits and they sell and move away. most of us here like it like that. one house around here sold 4 times in the last 6 years ! really nice house too.
lots of big windows, great view too. but on top of a ridge it gets a lot of winter wind, snow and deep chilling cold.
BTW. they do a great job on the roads around here in winter too. 1-2 hours after the snow stops, the roads are clear and safe to dive on.

  7. Just imagine how cold it would be if not for all that global warming/climate change/whatever...

  8. I was born in SoCal in the late 50s. My snow experience is from the San Gabriel Mtns & the Sierra Nevada Mtns. I learned quickly I did not like the cold.
