Waking up in the twilight hours night after night is enough to drive anyone to distraction - but a leading sleep expert in England says the clue to falling back asleep is actually to accept that you’ve woken up.
And while it might seem counterintuitive, Dr David Garley, an NHS GP and director of The Better Sleep Clinic, told the Daily Mail that the pressure we put on ourselves to go back to sleep is often what makes it impossible to nod off.
He said: 'If you wake up annoyed that you've woken up, and that annoyance stops you getting back to sleep that's the problem. But actually, it's often about accepting that you will sometimes wake a bit in the night.’
Society and our daily lives largely adhere to a schedule which slots into our 24 daily hours, but our bodies have their own inbuilt clock system, called the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm’s role is to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, and everyone's is different. You can read more of this report here.
