E-bikes will become motorcycles under yet another new bill
being advanced by New Jersey Democrats...
In their place, the bill expands the definition of “motorized bicycle” to include any pedal bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists while pedaling or can propel the bike through a throttle.
By redefining e-bikes as motorized bicycles, riders would be required to register their e-bikes with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, obtain insurance, and hold either a valid basic driver’s license or a motorized bicycle license. Operators would generally need to be at least 17 years old, though riders as young as 15 could qualify with a motorized bicycle license after passing an examination.

Why would you lose your shit over the state requiring a driver's license to operate a motor vehicle? Mopeds, back in the day, required a driver's license to operate. Why would gas versus electric make a difference?
DeleteCalif of course requires a license for e-bikes and limits how fast and how many watts they can have. You need a license to blow your nose here.
ReplyDeleteI live in NJ and these things are everywhere. Almost always driven by Mexicans or Chinese. They go 30-40mph. They don’t have turn signals or brake lights and the headlights are not bright enough. And they don’t have to obey any traffic rules. They are a menace. I can barely see them at night because everyone here goes out nught strolling/riding dressed in black. In NJ you need a license for a moped. These are faster.
