Hot as ice?

Gliese 436 b is similar in size and mass to Neptune, making it a Neptune-sized exoplanet (An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside of our solar system). It orbits it's star in a remarkably short period of just over 2 Earth days, indicating a very close orbit. The planet is very close to its star, about 1/13th the distance between Mercury and the Sun.
Gliese 436 b has a high surface temperature of approximately 439°C (822°F), making it a "hot Neptune". The planet's atmosphere is unusual, lacking methane but containing a significant amount of carbon monoxide. The planet's high gravity compresses water vapor into a unique form of ice that can exist at extremely high temperatures. It is estimated to be at least 6 billion years old.

  1. Are people just making stuff like this up? How could we even verify if they are telling the truth?
