Can you remember back in 1985 when they shot themselves in the foot with the introduction of "New Coke" by The Coca-Cola Company? It is singularly one of the most famous case studies in marketing and brand loyalty, not unlike that tranny pushing Bud Light...
Although the company intended to revitalize the brand and compete more effectively with Pepsi, the reformulation of the classic soda's flavor was met with immense consumer backlash.
Will the renaming/rebranding of MSNOW help or hurt them? Honestly, they don't have far to fall, and the social media backlash has been pretty robust and kinda fun to watch. I guess this is one of them 'stay tuned' moments, but you really don't have to stay tuned to THAT channel. Watch and see...

It's like a bad restaurant. Change the sign, update the menu, paint the walls, and keep the same staff. It sounds good to those investing in the madness, but reality states the doors will close forever.
ReplyDeleteWhen I worked at Microsoft, they had MSNBC on tellies in all the cafeterias and a lot of the lounge and waiting areas. Never paid much attention. Still won't. 1985's coke flop was immense. The new stuff is terrible. But, here in the Valley we have Mexican coke in every store, mercado, carnicería, and shop. It's the old coke in my mind. This newer coke; haven't had it yet. Might try it soon. As far as Bud Lite, they could have tranny space aliens touting it, but I won't drink that stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhen MSNBC was launched, the Clinton administration was looking at breaking up Microsoft for anti-trust reasons. MSNBC was all in for the Democrats. I eventually contacted investor services and asked why they were supporting the people trying to breakup the company. She paused, said it was a good question, but never got back to me. Never do business with people trying to commit suicide.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the big to-do is, so they switch it from MSNBC to More Shit NOW. See? That's change!!

I've heard two persistent rumors about New Coke.
ReplyDelete1) There were some board members who were making trouble over the taste of Coke, compared to Pepsi. New Coke gave them enough rope to hang themselves, and when it failed they then "retired to spend more time with their families." Thus the troublemakers were gone.
2) It allowed Coke to move from sucrose to High Fructose corn (HFC) syrup. Because people were expecting a taste change from New Coke to "Coke Original", they didn't notice it wasn't sucrose. That's why Mexican Coke tastes so much better; it still uses sucrose. HFC allows a much greater margin of profitability and avoids the tariff on cane sugar.
It'll always be MSDNC, regardless of what they call the network.
