Having lived through Sahara Dust plumes, I can tell ya - it sucks big time...

Along with haze, the desert dust will catalyze scorching temperatures of around 105 degrees in the Sunshine State and an uptick in allergies - but it will also bring brighter sunsets and suppress tropical thunderstorms. Experts call the clouds the 'Saharan Air Layer' - defined as 'a mass of very dry, dusty air that forms over the Sahara Desert during the late spring, summer and early fall'. When this air mass combines with strong jet streams - like the ones currently moving across the Atlantic and heading towards the south-east coast - the plumes can travel thousands of miles.

I lived on (and off - story for another day) St. John for 15 years. This is an annual occurance down there, and you learn to live with it. Does make for some pretty spectacular sunsets, but otherwise, it sucks. Let the humidity begin...

This would have come in handy down there.

It can instantly produce cold air and
make your room cool down to drop to 75℉.
Comes with a remote.

  1. I am less worried about DUST coming from North Africa than I worry about the SCUM coming out of North Africa.

This part of the Valley is a desert composed mostly of very fine sandy loam. Spring plowing is removing the winter ground cover and clouds of dust are in the air. In fact there was a very bad multi-vehicle wreck this weekend near the Oregon border due to strong winds and dense dust. The air was pretty gritty here this weekend, so I feel ya, man. My prescription is to stay inside, usually in one of the many pubs or wineries here abouts, and wash the grit outta my teeth. And it works!

  3. Europeans get the Sahara dust on a regular basis. And..? Move along. Nothing to see here...

  4. So the air will be both chewy AND crunchy for the next couple of weeks.
    That's supergreat.

  5. I remember back in the late 80's when the same weather pattern hit. It rained mud in lower Alabama.
