Here's what you need to know about it:
The facility is located on an isolated airfield, the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, about 45 miles west of downtown Miami in the Everglades. It's been dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" by state officials due to its remote location and the surrounding swamps filled with wildlife like alligators and pythons.
It's intended to be a temporary detention facility for undocumented migrants.
Deterrent: Supporters suggest the name and the facility's remote location are meant to act as a deterrent. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated that if someone is housed there, there's "no way in, no way out". The facility is expected to be ready for business soon, with a proposed capacity of 5,000 beds, and is estimated to cost $450 million per year.
The project has sparked controversy, with concerns raised by environmental and immigration advocate groups about its potential impact on the Everglades ecosystem and the well-being of the detainees. A lawsuit has been filed by environmentalists to stop its opening, alleging it violates environmental law.
Unlike the historic Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay, which does not have alligators or snakes, the Florida facility is specifically situated in an area known for these animals. The San Francisco Bay around Alcatraz Island does, however, contain sharks. The facility is a part of Florida's efforts to implement President Trump's immigration crackdown. He is expected to visit the facility tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteThey'll need to put a fence up, preferably a double fence. The deep Everglades is practically a nature park compared to the Darien Gap in Panama or some of the other shithole places in central and south America.
ReplyDeleteFortunately the US military has some excellent fence installing vehicles and razor-wire installing vehicles.
Jobs are posted to Indeed for Alligator Alcatraz. 94K a year. Tempting.
ReplyDeleteAll for it. The state klink up here is in Seward. One road in & out. A gazillion square miles of dense wilderness outside the fence full of grizzlies on one side and the icy cold Gulf of Alaska on the other. Ya ain’t gettin far if ya do get out….
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened with turning the real Alcatraz into a fed prison? I want hundreds of traitors sent there for life. And everyday there is a mandatory swim around the island.
