A General who never lost a battle? Yup - and he was one of 'ours'. Sorta...

So you’ve never heard of George H. Thomas? That’s understandable.
A native of Virginia, he was an undefeated Union general who played a key role in winning the Civil War. He and his family were almost killed in Nat Turner’s slave revolt of 1831. When he chose to remain loyal to the Union at the beginning of the war, his spinster sisters turned his picture to the wall and never spoke to him again.
After many victories and much fine fighting, he earned recognition as “The Rock of Chickamauga" by saving a Union army at that battle when his commander and most of the army fled. Later, he virtually destroyed a Western Confederate army in December 1864, a victory earned him the sobriquet "The Sledge of Nashville."  Unfortunately, he and Ulysses S. Grant were like oil and water - they did not mix or get along very well. Thomas also had the unfortunate and unfair nickname of "Slow Trot" because of his alleged slowness going into battle. In the end, he was cut off from end-of-war glory and postwar army leadership positions by the Grant–Sherman–Sheridan clique of generals.  He was born in Virginia, but when the Civil War came, he chose to stand with the Union. He said simply, "I am an officer of the United States Army." That choice cost him everything back home. His family disowned him. They never spoke to him again.
After the war, he faded quietly from public life. He died not long after, and when they held his funeral, not a single member of his family came. The man who never lost a battle was laid to rest in silence.

An excellent read if you're a Civil War buff like I am...

  1. Actually, I am the great, great, great etc. grandson of general Thomas. My grand dad was G H thomas, and I still retain a walking stick from his term as mayor of Gulfport Mississippi.

  2. I believe the "Slow Trot" and other nicknames were due to a condition (spinal?) that made it painful for him to ride a horse very fast. Although a slow trot can't be any better in that regards.

  3. Years ago I shared an apartment with Jubal Early's great-...grandson. Looked just like him with a beard.
