Yeah - never did think they brought it back with them, didja? Anyway, NASA is offering $3 million to anyone who can invent a way to “recycle” dozens of bags of poop astronauts left on the moon more than half a century ago.
The space agency wants to come up with a way to transform 96 sacks of feces, urine and vomit — ditched by Apollo astronauts to lighten their load — into water, energy, and fertilizer, it said. The so-called “LunaRecycle Challenge” urges scientists and innovators to solve the crappy problem and kickstart a “biological legacy” in time for its upcoming moon mission.
The competition’s deadline was March 31 and NASA is now getting ready to pore through the pitches.

$3 million?
ReplyDeleteSimple.
Build a series of SLS systems that, after a proper amount of testing like six or seven launches, will send a helicopter to the moon to pick it up and put it in a nicely colored bag, and then, like loads of dog owners do, will 'accidentally' drop it somewhere when nobody is watching.
You can mail me the check tomorrow.
If ya could bring it back, you'd get gabillions for the stuff from collectors and such. The process is simple. First, bring it back, then sell it on Ebay. See, simple!
ReplyDeleteI would think the poop, pee and vomit would be easily mixed with soil (lunar regolith) and would quickly break down into fertilizer just as it is now.
ReplyDeleteThe stuff is dry, and sterile from the vacuum and the cold. Add any soil bacterial nd it would be decent in a week or two.
You would think that after 50 years of exposure to hard vacuum, intense ultraviolet radiation, cycles of intense heat and cold, and brilliant sunlight, the stuff would already be pretty well broken down into it's residual solid elements and simple compounds.
ReplyDeleteWe never went, there is no poop, this is the greatest government grift ever. I thought DOGE was eliminating government waste?
ReplyDeleteSend Matt Whats-his-name (Damon) there to grow potatoes.
ReplyDeleteScience the shit out of this.
DeleteSend a rocket to pick it up and send it into the sun. COD of course.
