Is it really worth three hours on the road in fucked-up
heavy traffic just to feed a craving?
Sometimes, the frozen ones from the grocery store just don't do the job, so, right now, yeah - a road trip is my only option.
I heard they're building one in Clermont - that's only an hour away. When are these guys gonna figure out there's 160,000+ people just in The Villages area (between Leesbur and Ocala) that would crawl on their knees for a coupla sliders? With cheese, of course...

If what you miss is the nostalgia, you'd be better off trying a knock-off recipe. I don't think you could get a burger now-a-days like they used to make them.
ReplyDeleteI like the double White Castle with middle piece of bread removed and a bit of mustard added.
ReplyDeleteyou actually eat sliders???Worse than McDs....
ReplyDeleteIs it safe to assume that you have never served in the US Armed Forces and eaten at a Mess Hall?
DeleteSome of the best food I ever had. The worst was probably the Foil Pack meals we got at the SAC missile Launch Control Facilities. During my tour at Minot, I brought out surplus C-Rations and Cup-o'-Soup. The FPs were loaded with salt, butter, and you could not make a simple meat-potato-veg meal under 2500 calories. I'd get 2 meals and a snack out of a C-Rat. Plus coffee...LOTS of coffee!
Delete'Twasn't White Castle that made for what we now call Fast Food, but rather the original McDonald Brothers who started McDonalds (and sold out to Ray Krok) and their "Speedy System" of assembling food.
ReplyDeleteThey sold the concept to Glenn Bell, and Dave Thomas and Edgerton/Macnamore, and Frank and Donald Thomas, and a few others, all of whom started the great chains we knew of in our youth.
They WERE the first burger joint.
I may have missed it in a previous post, but just in case I'll ask, have you tried Krystal ham/cheeseburgers??? I like both Krystal and White Castle burgers equally, but that is me. My wife eats neither but she will eat Krystal's chili-cheese-dogs, etc. To each their own. I think the closest WC to me is in Bowling Green, KY (250 mi. north). I was grown before I ever saw a WC and it was several years later before I tried one. My first thought was, it tastes like a Krystal.

Chain store burgers are crap, In-N-Out Burger is okish, you can make a much better burger at home.
