Valentine's Day is reported by some sources to have originated as a Christian feast day to honor a martyr named Valentine. The holiday became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Pope Gelasius I made February 14 a day of remembrance for St. Valentine in the late 5th century. The holiday may have been based on the martyrdom of two men named Valentine who were executed by Emperor Claudius II on February 14 in different years in the third century.
One legend says that Valentine was a Catholic priest who defied Emperor Claudius II by performing weddings for soldiers, even though it was against the law. Another legend says that Valentine prayed with Julia, the blind daughter of his jailer, and God restored her sight.
In early traditions, people would pull names of eligible young ladies out of an urn to select a Valentine.
The term "my Valentine" became a way for noblemen to woo a potential mate. Shakespeare used the term in his play Hamlet.

On February 14, 1929, seven members of George "Bugs" Moran's gang were murdered in a Chicago garage in what became known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The attack was allegedly ordered by Al Capone, a notorious Chicago crime boss. However, Capone was never questioned about the murders, and no one was ever tried for the crime.
