ReplyDeleteNot the girl the song is about, but one hired for about $200 to dance when the song was re-recorded about ten years later. Lisa Leonard something, who had been recognized as the best dancer at Gazzara's nightclub, which was well known for the dancing there. (There's a video about her on this website a few posts later.)
ReplyDeleteBy all accounts, this dance was neither choreographed nor rehearsed. She may not have even known the song. They simply told her to wear a tank top and shorts, no bra, and to wait at a particular spot until she heard the music, walk towards it, and dance. They gave her the hat, and told her to tuck her hair under it until the singer went "Sloopy, let your hair hang down." And she carried it off perfectly. A Hollywood movie director would have rehearsed that few minutes for days, then filmed it a dozen times, and never have caught such a perfect video of a pretty girl just hearing the music, walking up, and spontaneously dancing - because although a few things were pre-arranged, her dance was spontaneous.
