Tater tots were invented in 1953 by brothers F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg at their Ore-Ida food processing plant in Ontario, Oregon. The brothers were looking for a way to use excess potato shavings from making frozen french fries, which were originally sold as animal feed. They mashed the leftover potato pieces, cut them into cylinders, added flour and seasoning, and pushed the mixture through holes to create a shredded potato.
