The year is 1947. Granted that's 84 years ago, but this illustrates just how much times have changed. This typical housewife poses with a week's worth of groceries from her local supermarket, where the shelves are full again now that the war is behind them. She spent $12.50 for the week to buy all her groceries except milk. On this she managed to feed herself, her husband, her four-year-old twins and the family cat.
$10 in 1947 has the same purchasing power as $134.91 today. Over the 76 years the average inflation rate of the dollar between 1947 and 2023 was 2.16% per year. The cumulative price increase of the dollar over this time was 1,249.06%.
Interesting perspective, huh?

I was born in 1950. My mother used to buy groceries for the family of seven with a $20 bill and have change for my older siblings bus fare for the week.
ReplyDeleteYou had me going there for a minute, thought I was 86 years old. Actually, 1947 was 76 years ago as I was born then and last time I checked, I'm only 76 years old.
