Professor Neil Ferguson found the mutant strain was up to 45 per cent less likely to lead to hospitalisation - supporting Boris Johnson's decision to delay imposing restrictions.
The British adviser - who just last week warned there could be 5,000 daily Omicron deaths in the UK - said the fourth wave will be 'nothing like what was seen last year' on the back of the new findings.
A similar study from Scotland published yesterday (top and bottom right) found the risk of being hospitalised with Omicron was 65 per cent less than with Delta - but it was based on only 15 admissions with the new strain. (top right, green dots represent Delta and green dots represent Omicron). It also found people who had received three doses of the vaccine were less likely to be infected with either Omicron or Delta than those who only had two doses or one dose (bottom right).
A third study from South Africa found an 80 per cent reduced risk of hospitalization with the new variant compared to its predecessor.
