The co-founder of Black Lives Matter's Los Angeles chapter on Tuesday issued a statement in support of actor Jussie Smollett. Smollett, 39, is currently on trial accused of staging a January 29, 2019 attack in Chicago to try and win sympathy from the producers of his show, Empire. Smollett is accused of having lied to Chicago police about being the victim of an anti-gay, racist hate crime.
Dr Melina Abdullah on Tuesday said that she supported Smollett because 'we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department'.
Smollett was described as someone 'who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom'. Abdullah added: 'Police lie and Chicago police lie especially'. Other liberals have condemned Smollett, including figures such as Rev. Al Sharpton, and a researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center.
