The ones who went off to war aren't
the only ones who suffered...
Some of the Army foods of WWII.
The problem of food shortages was addressed by rationing. The best protein-rich food - meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheese - and staples like coffee, tea, sugar and flour were largely given over to the military for the men at the front. Meanwhile, back at home, people made do with "Roosevelt coffee" - coffee made with reused grounds; you were allotted one pound of coffee every five weeks, "Economy Loaf" - a meatless loaf made with whatever you had, usually beans, potatoes, carrots and peas, and in places like Poland, bread made with "tree flour" (sawdust).
Could you just see the rioting in the streets if something like this ever got imposed on us. I along with a lot of other folks tend to forget just how many sacrifices were made by our parents so we can enjoy what we have today.

DeleteThankfully my uncle wrote up a family history before he passed. My parents, aunts and uncles never complained about any of this. We have it so good, and it just kills me to watch ignorant fools destroy it all.
ReplyDeleteMy father and cousin did the same...
DeleteSo I guess we can thank the Polish for sawdust in our Parmesan cheese?..../s
