Let's close the world down - maybe that'll work

At what point does 'an abundance of caution' become just plain stupid?

...

In California: Eventually everything will be closed or canceled - and now there may be state takeovers of private property!

Disneyland, March Madness, NHL, NBA: all now canceled. And if you didn't think that Cali Gov. Gavin Newsom was a fuckin' whackjob before, you better fuckin' believe it now brutha. First he sets up a public health directive that events over 250 people should be canceled or postponed, and just yesterday issued an executive order that allows the state to take over private assets for coronavirus treatment.

The State of California can now confiscate privately owned property 'for cause'. Think about that.

I really was looking forward to this.

Antidepressant Microbes In Soil:
How Soil Makes Your Brain Happy

Soil microbes have been found to have similar effects on the brain as prozac, without the negative side effects and potential for chemical dependency and withdrawal.

The soil microbe mycobacterium vaccae has been found to mirror the effect on neurons in the brain that drugs like Prozac can provide, but without side effects.
The way it works is the “happy” microbes in soil cause cytokine levels to rise, which leads to the production of more serotonin.

This bacterium is found in healthy soil and when humans are exposed to it, the microbe stimulates serotonin production. Serotonin makes us feel relaxed and happier. Conversely, lack of serotonin has been linked to depression, anxiety, OCD, and bipolar disorders. Some studies on cancer patients have demonstrated better quality of life and less stress when patients were given mycobacterium vaccae.

Scientists also tested the microbe via injection and ingestion on rats and compared results to a control group. They found that cognitive ability, lower stress, and better concentration were notable benefits that lasted 3 weeks time.

Mycobacterium antidepressant microbes in soil are also being investigated for improving cognitive function, Crohn’s disease, and even rheumatoid arthritis.  Farmers and gardeners come in contact with this bacterium by having topical contact with it, inhaling it, and getting it into their bloodstreams when they have small cuts or other pathways for infection.

I've always thought of working in my garden as being somewhat  'therapeutic'...

Can't argue with that kinda logic.

The old (but still running) Newark City Subway

In this picture, Car 20, having departed Davenport Avenue station, continues inbound on the Newark City Subway. That station was unique, being the only NCS station without transit connections - a purely neighborhood stop.

Davenport Avenue, a couple blocks from the place where I grew up, is on the left. The bridge over the tracks deposited you on the outbound platform, with an entrance to Branch Brook Park, along which the subway ran for half its length.

Imagine getting off there after work or school and walking across the park to your Forest Hills neighborhood. What a great place to grow up in.

When most people think of Florida, ranching rarely comes to mind.

Deseret Ranches is what we long time Floridians call the Mormon Ranch.  At about 295,000 acres, it is the largest ranch in Florida and the largest cow-calf cattle ranch in the United States.

It is 10 times larger than Walt Disney World and has been in Central Florida a lot longer.

The heart of the ranch is located about 50 miles southeast of Orlando International Airport and 19 miles west of Kennedy Space Center.  It spreads over three counties:  Osceola, Orange, and Brevard.

For her 75th birthday,
Dolly Parton wants to be on the cover of Playboy - again.

Dolly Parton turned 74 this year. And she's not letting her age stop her from planning her Playboy return.

Parton graced the magazine's cover in 1978 when she was 32. She wants return -- for her 75th birthday.

"I don't plan to retire. I just turned 74 and I plan to be on the cover of Playboy magazine again," Parton told 60 Minutes Australia over the weekend. "See, I did Playboy magazine years ago and I thought it'd be such a hoot if they'll go for it — I don't know if they will — if I could be on the cover again when I'm 75."

For the first time in nine years, human spaceflight is returning to the U.S., and this  time it's not NASA - it’s the commercial space industry that’s making it happen.

Ever been to Franklin, Tenessee?

Less than 30 minutes from Nashville, one highlight of Franklin is the live music nights at Puckett’s Grocery. You just never know what performer could show up for open mic night. It’s also reported to be “one of the best-preserved downtowns” in the country. It has a pretty cool Main street that looks like it's straight outta the 1800s.

There making this jughead into a celebrity?

Thursday night former Presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! to a mostly empty audience due to coronavirus. In his opening monologue, Buttigieg explained how the bizarro scenario took place joking “that Iowa Caucus app REALLY screwed everything up” before explaining that Kimmel asked him to guest host because he had to shoot Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, a show, he quipped, that rival Mayor Michael Bloomberg has won “about 56 thousand times.” Mayor Pete, clearly always up for a challenge, agreed to guest host well before every thing on earth - including his live, studio audience - was cancelled due to coronavirus.

Judge orders Chelsea Manning to be released from jail

'SHE' will not comply. Just shoot me. Now.

A federal judge ordered the release of former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning on Thursday, just one day after she attempted to take her own life while in prison. Manning has been in jail since May, in Alexandria, Va., for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks.

She told the judge in May that she’d “rather starve to death” than comply with the subpoena.

U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga ordered Manning's release after prosecutors said the grand jury had been disbanded, The Associated Press reported.

Hands down, one of the best (and cheapest) ways to see America's vast beauty is by train. Don't believe us? Then allow us to introduce you to Amtrak's Coast Starlight, which has been called "one of America's most beautiful train rides" since the 1940s.

Starting in Seattle and ending in Los Angeles, the Coast Starlight train trip takes passengers through Washington, Oregon, and California, allowing them to see stunning views of the West Coast's mountains, forests, valleys, and Pacific Ocean. Passengers can take in the sights from the observation car, which is decked out in floor to ceiling windows and comfortable swivel chairs.

And here's the best part — tickets for the spectacular journey start at just $97.

The entire route takes 35+ hours and travels through 30 destinations, including Olympia-Lacey, Portland, Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay area, and Santa Barbara. On the trip, riders will see the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, the Santa Barbara Channel, several national parks and forests, and, of course, the Pacific coastline.

Catholic Masses canceled this weekend, schools closed, Archdiocese of Newark says

This weekend’s Masses are canceled in New Jersey’s largest Catholic diocese and the faithful are not obliged to go to church on Sundays until further notice, Cardinal Joseph Tobin said late Thursday.

The Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Newark will also be closed next week as the state tries to combat the coronavirus pandemic, the Archdiocese of Newark announced.
