Monday is a hateful word.

But none the less we persevere...

It's human body fact Monday thanks to good friend Wendy Davis!

Today's human body fact: Drinking alcoholic beverages and why they make you pee more than normal and why you feel tired the day after. If you've ever had 3 or more adult beverages in a night, you may have noticed you start feeling a little sleepy(night cap). You think you'll sleep good tonight because you're already sleepy. Wrong.

Alcohol actually interferes with your REM stage of sleep. This is the stage of sleep where your dreams occur, and it's thought to be the restorative sleep our body craves. Disruptions in REM sleep can cause daytime drowsiness, and poor concentration. The more you drink before bed, the stronger the disruption. So let's talk about the second part of the alcohol disruption: peeing. Without going into too much physiology and keeping it really simple, the kidneys filter and excrete things in/out of our body. When we drink a lot of water, the body takes what it needs and excretes the rest via urination. (Keep the above in mind) Alcohol acts as a diuretic. Diuretics increase elimination/peeing.

So now you're drinking your alcoholic beverage (adding fluid to your body) and at the same time and drinking a diuretic. Now your kidneys are working to get rid of all this extra fluid, causing you to have to wake up to pee more often in the middle of the night and your sleep is already disrupted from the lack of REM sleep. (This affect is even worse when your older because your sleep already sucks and you wake up to pee anyway.) This creates a vicious cycle and when you awaken the next morning, you feel extremely tired and DEHYDRATED, which can also cause you to have a headache. (maybe day drinking isn't a terrible an idea😉)
