Errol Flynn, 1935

Flynn was an Australian who got some theatrical training and two small film parts after moving to the UK. His performance in those two films led to a Hollywood contract with Warner Bros.

For Warners’ new swashbuckling adventure film Captain Blood they tested every male under contract for the lead after their three biggest male stars turned it down (Robert Donat, James Cagney and Leslie Howard). Impressed by his performance, Warners gave him the part.

Captain Blood was a huge hit (and his first opposite Olivia de Havilland, the first of eight films they would make together), and Errol Flynn was a movie star.
