Hundreds of thousands of Iranian 'volunteers' - the word means something a little different over there - flooded the streets of Tehran on Friday for a government-organized rally calling on civilians to join the military and prepare to “sacrifice their lives.” It was the largest demonstration in the country since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.
Dubbed “Janfaday-e Iran,” or “ones who sacrifice their lives for Iran,” the rally was designed to project national unity as Tehran faces a worsening economy amid US sanctions and a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
The Sacrifice for Iran campaign is a social mobilization movement that emerged in 2026. The campaign was launched following threats by the United States to target Iranian islands during the 2026 Iran war.
The campaign reportedly attracted millions of 'volunteer' registrants, with organizers claiming that more than 31 million people enlisted, saying also that no one had a gun put to their head and convinced - or had their lives and their families threatened with torture or death, or both. Critics and members of the Iranian diaspora have questioned the accuracy of these figures, citing a lack of independently verified data.
