Inside the auto shop at Louisa County High School in Virginia, students aren’t practicing on cars that will simply be torn apart again. They’re repairing vehicles for real families.
The school partners with a nonprofit called Giving Words, which helps single mothers who are struggling with transportation. Students spend months inspecting and refurbishing donated cars, working on brakes, tires, fluids, batteries, heating and cooling systems.
Then comes the part they remember. The finished vehicle is handed to a mother free of charge. The program has been operating for about eight years, with students working on roughly five giveaway cars each year.
One recipient said her car helped her get to work and care for her six children. Another was able to move from part-time to full-time employment and continue her education. And for the students, it’s more than learning mechanics. As one teenager put it, the class “gives you more of a purpose.”
