Before the Dixie Highway existed, reaching Florida by car from anywhere north of the state was nearly impossible, roads simply didn't connect that far. Its construction in the early 1900s fundamentally changed how Americans experienced Florida for the very first time.
Built through a patchwork of local and state funding, the highway eventually stretched from the Midwest all the way down through Florida, opening the state to a wave of automobile tourism that had never existed before. Small towns along the route transformed almost overnight, building motels, roadside attractions, and diners to capture the growing stream of travelers making the long drive south for the winter season.
It's incredible to think an entire era of Florida tourism only became possible because of one ambitious road project. That's Life in Florida for ya.
