We were not color blind. We were hateful and ignorant...

This image is a photograph titled "Rex Billiard Hall for Colored" taken by Marion Post Wolcott in October 1939. The scene is located on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. It illustrates the "separate but equal" doctrine of racial segregation in practice during the mid-20th century.
The original photograph is part of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information collection at the Library of Congress. Here it is 'colorized'.
Just goes to show you - in black and white or fully in color, it shows the ignorance and hatred black Americans still faced in the deep south so many decades after the Civil War. Sad but true, a terrible reminder of the sins of our past.

  1. I'm sorry but I have to ask. Are you somehow arguing that the "separate but equal" doctrine was not bad?

  3. Sorry but the actions of today's blacks calls for caution. Even obama said he "crossed the street if he saw a black man." You can call it racism, I call it common sense.

    1. At night many people cross the street if we see a man--before we're close enough to see his color.

  5. and you get to thank democrats for it all. the kkk, the jim crow laws, the lynchings. all sponsored and instigated by southern democrats. they love that blacks and whites seem to have forgotten the actual history.

  9. My Dad had a model T, and when the "persons" would lay around the car, sitting on it, the car would shock the person, with the ignition coil being hooked up somehow.
