He never fired a shot...

In the spring of 1945, as the battle for Okinawa raged, a quiet medic named Desmond Doss carved his name into history without ever firing a shot. A devout Seventh-day Adventist and conscientious objector, Doss refused to carry a weapon, believing it was wrong to take life. Instead, armed only with his faith, a medic’s kit, and unyielding courage, he rushed again and again into enemy fire. On the escarpment known as Hacksaw Ridge, Doss single-handedly rescued 75 wounded men, lowering them down a sheer cliff with nothing but a rope and his bare hands, praying each time: “Lord, help me get one more.”
When the war ended, the nation took notice. On October 12, 1945, Desmond Doss stood at the White House, humbly bowing his head as President Harry S. Truman placed the Medal of Honor around his neck. Truman, himself a World War I veteran, shook Doss’s hand firmly and told him, “I’m proud of you. You really deserve this. I consider this a greater honor than being president.”
For Doss, the medal was never about glory. It was about proving that one man’s conviction, held fast against ridicule and doubt, could save lives instead of taking them.

  1. Desmond Doss is one of the greatest stories of God's infinite mercy.

  2. My Dad was a Marine who spent over 2 years in the Pacific. He was blown up on Okinawa, had massive scars, spent over a year in 2 Naval Hospitals. He would never talk about WW2.

  3. I met Desmond Doss as a kid back in the 60's at an SDA camp meeting. He was a very quiet reserved person. Seldom spoke.

  4. Always great to hear these stories about Medal of Honor winners. My great uncle was a medic in Europe - 4 amphibious landings, never wounded, won a Silver Star and then went back home to the farm. We can't do enough to record these brave men's accomplishments and lives.
