What you see here describes the Dihydrogen Monoxide parody, a famous science fair project by Nathan Zohner in 1997. The Experiment Zohner provided his classmates with a list of technically true but frightening facts about "dihydrogen monoxide" (DHMO), including: It is a major component of acid rain. It can cause severe burns (in its gaseous state). Accidental inhalation can be fatal. It is found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors.
The Result, based on these alarming descriptions was that 43 out of 50 students voted to ban the substance. They learned a valuable lesson without even realizing itt. The project is a classic example of how scientific illiteracy and fear-based framing can be used to mislead people.
"Dihydrogen monoxide" (\(H_{2}O\)) is simply the chemical name for water. His point? Facts don't always lead to truth if you don't think critically.
He won first prize...
