The difference between then and now - at least according to SCOTUS...

Obviously, we all know what a bitch perspective can be, and looking backwards at the Dred Scot ruling seems archaic and wrong, but it wasn't for that time and that society. Obviously, time cured all those ills, but today's issues with illegals probably won't change with time.
Alito's prescient overview of the ruling last week makes sense - at least to anyone who isn't blinded by partisan politics. It goes to the heart of the matter - if you are not an American citizen you are not entitled to the same rights, privileges and freedoms as we enjoy. It's really that simple.

Anyone here in the US has every right to expect - and receive - equal justice under the law if they're charged with a crime, but the penalties are - and should be - much different for non-citizens...

  2. If showing up at the border grants you instant US Citizen rights, that would include the 2nd.

  3. I like how they don't differentiate the slaves who had been here since (and before) the founding of the country and people who decide to crash the gates and say "I'm now a citizen of this country". My Great-Great-Grandfather came over from Norway in the 1880s and had to be sponsored by some already over here. No handouts, only a promise they could homestead and have a piece of land for themselves to live on. How do these people have American Rights without even being here much less being citizens? Go build and make your home country great again.

  4. But equal protection under color of law is different for migrants. Their fraud has been kept quiet. Their rapists, murders and looters have been allowed to walk free without punishment. But heaven forbid if you run a red light or get caught speeding. Best be pleading to your betters and fork over a few weeks' pay you earned but only got half because taxes...
