Las Vegas now finds itself blinking under the harsh glare of reality as the tourists thin out and the neon shine feels just a little less invincible than before. Long billed as the glittering playground of America, the Nevada city is once again facing uncomfortable questions about its future as fresh figures show a sharp downturn in visitor numbers.
The latest numbers have deepened fears that the city’s once unstoppable tourism machine is beginning to sputter, just as its already strained housing market shows signs of wobbling under pressure.
New data released Thursday by the Clark County Department of Aviation reveals passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport tumbled in May compared with the same month last year, with total volumes falling a striking 8.4 percent to 4.6 million travellers. Domestic travel bore the brunt of the slowdown, sliding 8.6 percent to 4.2 million passengers.
International traffic also weakened, down 5.7 percent to 286,306 arrivals and departures. Even the smaller but symbolic westside helicopter and general aviation sector saw a decline of 5.3 percent.

While Vegas is leading the lack in self destruction Reno isn't far behind. And BOTH markets are pricing themselves out of contention with other destinations. A plain cocktail at a RENO casino MIDWEEK is now $18-20. Vegas is even more overpriced. And everything else is just as overpriced. The casino industry in Nevada is committed suicide due to greed.
ReplyDeleteNever been to Vegas but I know people who go and they say they're not going back due to the exorbitant prices. Besides, they can go to casinos less than fifty miles away and lose their money there.
ReplyDeleteLas Vegas is suffering from the Carnival Cruise Lines disease.
ReplyDeletehere is the nail in the coffin, and it started quite a long time before this happened - - - https://nsjonline.com/article/2025/08/all-major-las-vegas-strip-casinos-unionized-in-historic-labor-victory/
ReplyDeleteLost Wages is repulsive. Bums, filth, garbage, and crime everywhere. NOTHING fun or refreshing anymore. Still better than Portland or Seattle though. No longer a bargain.
ReplyDeleteCorporate greed is what's killing Vegas.
ReplyDeleteBankruptcies will cure that.
American Indian owned casinos are doing to the Nevada gambling monopoly what the internet has done to the traditional media. At last count there were over 530 American Indian owned gambling casinos in the USA.
ReplyDeleteA big part of America can now gamble at a nearby casino within driving distance instead of having to fly to Nevada or foreign locations to gamble.
I agree witu you that Indian gaming is doing a number on Vegas. It didn't help that Vegas shot themselves in the foot at the same time. Even their cops make it clear they hate having tourists there. I don't know if Vegas' open hostility to tourists would have been sufficient to kill it or not, but I'm happy Indian casinos were there to push Vegas over the edge.
