According to a report from the Washington Examiner, Florida’s high-profile “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention center could soon be shutting its doors. The site was originally set up as a fast-track detention and deportation hub during the Trump administration’s push to crack down on illegal immigration. Its location near an airstrip made it easier to quickly fly migrants out of the country once deportation orders were approved. At its peak, the facility could hold around 2,000 people and played a role in deporting roughly 22,000 illegal immigrants, according to Florida officials.
Governor Ron DeSantis stopped short of confirming a shutdown but made it clear the facility was never meant to be permanent. The facility has reportedly cost about $1 million per day to operate, with Florida still waiting on federal reimbursement. On top of that, hurricane season in Florida runs from June through November, raising serious concerns about keeping a temporary detention center running safely in the middle of the Everglades.
