English is the most spoken language in the United States, serving as the de facto language for daily life and government operations. Historically, the United States has not had an officially designated national language at the federal level, as the U.S. Constitution does not specify one.
On March 1, 2025, an Executive Order was signed that officially designated English as the official language of the United States.
While federal status was historically absent, many individual states have adopted English as their official language over time.
