Cades Cove is a lush, mountain-surrounded valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (TN) known for its 11-mile one-way loop road, rich history, and abundant wildlife viewing, including black bears and deer. It features historic cabins, churches, and a working grist mill. The area is heavily visited, with access available daily from sunrise to sunset. An 11-mile, one-way paved road provides access, typically taking 2-4 hours to tour due to slow traffic.
From May 6 through September 30, 2026, the loop is closed to motor vehicles every Wednesday, allowing only pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Best times to spot black bears, white-tailed deer, and turkeys are early morning or late afternoon.
Visitor Center is located halfway through the loop (near the campground), offering souvenirs and historical information. Popular activities include touring historic cabins, hiking (e.g., Abrams Falls Trail), bicycling, and horseback riding.
South of Townsend, TN, roughly 31 miles from Pigeon Forge.Camping: The Cades Cove Campground is open year-round, offering sites for tents and RVs

And the best places to see bears along the Cades Cove route is up in trees. As vehicles come around corners the bears scamper up into trees. Speaking from experience having visited there a number of times.
