Florida announced that beginning April 20, 2026, SNAP recipients can no longer use benefits for sugary snacks and drinks. This follows federal approval to better promote nutrition for low-income families. By cutting soda, non-coffee energy drinks, candy, and ultra-processed desserts like cookies, snack cakes, and ice cream novelties, Florida fights hunger and poor health in the program.

SNEAKY ITEMS STILL OK
• Sugary coffee/tea drinks like Java Monster (coffee-based exception, even if sweet).
• Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade – not sold as “energy drinks”).
• Low-sugar sodas (<5g added sugar) or mostly juice drinks.
• Cold deli meats, cheese, salads (packaged for home).
·
QUICK BANNED LIST
• Sodas, standard energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster).
• Candy, gum, chocolate bars.
• Shelf-stable desserts such as cookies, cupcakes, snack cakes, pies, and ice cream novelties – even if they are “less processed” or from the deli case, they are still considered ultra-processed prepared desserts and are not allowed with SNAP under the new rules.
·
WHAT ABOUT DELI FOODS?
Hot deli foods (like rotisserie chicken, hot pizza, or heated prepared meals) remain ineligible – federal rule unchanged.
Cold deli items like meats, cheese, and salads are OK if packaged to take home. However, any cakes, cookies, cupcakes, or other sweet desserts – even cold deli desserts – are banned, regardless of how “simple” or “not ultra-processed” they look.

Florida can do it for 2 reasons.
ReplyDelete1. One party has full control of government. If that party wants it it gets done.
2. This is all for show and has no real impact on anyone. Nobody is pushing back against this measure because it is largely a performative bill that has no real impact.
SNAP recipients can't buy soda with SNAP benefit. Big deal. Money is fungible. People will use SNAP funds to buy something that is allowed and that they used to buy with real dollars and that will release real dollars to buy soda. Problem solved. We all know it. We all have known it forever.
This is the same argument Republicans used not to fund non-abortion related services at Planned Parenthood.
It is all a show with no real impact.
That is why neither Walmart nor Coke nor any other player that would be potentially impacted by this law is not even wasting time in pushing back.
At a supermarket last month, woman in front of me had an entire shopping cart filled with king crab legs. Filled to overflowing. Paid with snap cards, multiple. Drove off in a Lincoln Navigator.
ReplyDeleteGrocery store rotisserie chicken is a bit of a ripoff depending on the grocery store. Costco and Sam's rotisserie chicken is a phenomenal deal, cheaper than a raw chicken these days.
