Reported By: CBS News and Florida Hillbilly April 21, 2026 - Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) has officially resigned from Congress, stepping down just hours before a scheduled House Ethics Committee meeting. The bipartisan panel was prepared to recommend disciplinary sanctions following an investigation that found she committed 25 out of 27 alleged ethics violations during her time in office.
The committee concluded there was substantial evidence that the congresswoman participated in a scheme to steal approximately $5 million in federal FEMA disaster relief funds to finance her 2021 campaign. Cherfilus-McCormick is currently facing a 15-count criminal indictment, including money laundering and theft of government funds, which carries a potential sentence of up to 53 years.
It’s a swift and messy fall from grace for a politician who was supposed to be representing her community, not treating federal disaster relief like a personal ATM for her campaign. Resigning right before the committee dropped the hammer is a classic "jump before you're pushed" move, but it won't do much to help her when she faces those federal judges. In Florida, they say the sun shines on everyone, but it’s looking pretty dark for this particular career right now.
