Instead of moving out. the new trend is staying put...

For many young Americans, moving out is evidently becoming harder to afford. The map shows the share of 18–34-year-olds living with their parents in each U.S. state, using rounded 2025 U.S. Census Bureau data via FinanceBuzz. Nationally, the figure now stands at 33%, meaning one in three young adults still live at home. That is slightly below the 2020 pandemic peak, but still far above historical norms and a sign of how sharply housing costs have reshaped the path to 'independence'.
As it stands nowadays, as many as one in three U.S. adults (ages 18–34) now live with their parents.
The share ranges from 44.1% in New Jersey to just 12.3% in North Dakota, revealing a wide geographic divide. High-cost coastal and Northeastern states dominate the top of the ranking - supposedly because of the high cost of living there.
Here in The Villages, I peronally know probably a dozen or more guys in their 50's and 60's - all single/divorced/widowed - who've moved in with one single parent or the other (mostly Moms) to 'care for them' as they get older. I know the real reason most of these slackers are there. They can't or won't get a place of their own, and most are waiting to cash in on Mommy's demise. Doessn't make 'em likable in my book. Juss' sayin'...

One of the very few things my hometown of Newark, NJ has going for it any more is a substantial, robust park system, the vast majority of which the City of Newark has no control over - it's all managed (and quite well) by Essex County. The Essex County Park System boasts of the largest collection of Cherry Blossom Trees in the world outside of Japan. It's an annual ritual for anyone still living in the area to visit the park around this time of years. The trees are really spectacular. That photo I had up this morning is of the Second River - that divides Newark and Belleville - in Branch Brook Park - part of the County system.
Another spectacular section of that same park borders on and surrounds the magnificent Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in the neighborhood I grew up in. It's a truly beautiful church that seems so out of place for where it is.

This is funny as all gittup. This guy died and at his wake one woman hears another woman crying and saying how much she'll miss him and love of his life and all that other shit, turns out they were both fuckin' the guy and they started trying to beat the shit out of each other over the friggin' guy's casket, nearly knocking it - and it's contents - on the floor.
I can only hope when it's my turn to go that the same thing breaks out at my funeral, just on a much larger scale. Know what I mean?

Don't you all have days like that when you wanna just jump on your Big Wheel, flip everybody off and tell 'em all to go fuck themselves and just ride off in to the sunset? Shit, I have days like that four or five times a week - sometimes more...

Ya see what's going on with these Liberal 'leaders, right? They're all jumping on the 'The rich suck' bandwagon, trying to establish a kind of class-warfare between the 'haves' and the 'wants'. What all of these 'tax-the-rich' morons will never understand si that those people they want to rob the most are the people with the means of doing what they do wherever they may be - they are more mobile then the vast majority of people. Just look at how many people from LaLaLand and New York have moved to Texas and Florida - where they won't be penalized for their success.

I think I've mentioned it here before, but I bought one of these last month 'cause it's gonna be my new forever carry-on when we fly anywhere. You can jam just a boatload of stuff in to it - so much more than a typical small carry-on suitcase, and it's the same size. Take a look at it and see if it won't work for you, too. 1. I imagine the grown adults living with their parents are single.
From reading I have gotten the impression that in many cities you (used to) lived at home until you got married or joined the service.

With modern media manipulating the population seems to have gotten easier.

  3. I'm one of those "slackers" as you call them taking care of mom. She's been an invalid for 20 years. I feed her and change her dirty diapers and take care of all her needs. I have no life, can't go anywhere or do anything. My life been over for 20 years and she'll leave very little. YEAH IT"S EVERY SONS DREAM!!!!!!!

    1. It is very easy to point a statistic and blame people in general. It is much harder when talking about specific examples.
I feel for you and your sacrifice for your mother. I would do the same for my mother.

    3. Same here. If I wasn't a "slacker", Mom would have had to go into a nursing home which she did not want to do. She took care of me when I was unable to so taking care of her was the least I could do. I left my own place to do so. Our esteemed author is painting with quite a broad brush and is rushing to judgement.

    4. There's a major difference between young adults failing to launch and older adults taking care of elderly parents. Major. As in complete opposite. One is freeloading and the other is supporting. If your mother hasn't said it, let me say it for her, "thank you."
