The Florida Keys are full of history - and that includes where you eat! From conch fritters and fish sandwiches to cold beer with a view, these old-school spots have been serving up Keys classics for decades (some for over a century!).
Alabama Jack’s - Card Sound Road, Key Largo
Opened in the 1950s, this roadside, waterfront joint has been feeding guests for generations. Today, it’s known for conch fritters, cold beer, and its coveted Old Florida vibe.
Caribbean Club - Key Largo
One of my top ten bars for sure - it was built in 1938 as a private club, it later became famous as a filming location in the 1948 film 'Key Largo'. Now it’s a funky semi-biker casual waterfront bar with stunning sunset views, live music, and an ocassional food truck.
Green Turtle Inn - Islamorada
Since 1947, this spot has fed travelers everything from turtle steak and soup (back in the day) to fresh seafood and comfort food today.
Herbie’s Bar & Chowder House - Marathon
Opening in the 1940s, Herbie’s is the oldest continually operated restaurant in Marathon. Originally known as Maggie’s Chowder House, it became Herbie’s in 1963 and remains a beloved Middle Keys spot.
No Name Pub - Big Pine Key
Built in 1931 as a store, it became a pub in 1936. In the late 1930s, a brothel was added upstairs to boost business… but it didn’t last long as the fishermen were said to be better looking than the ladies. Today, it’s known for being a little hard to find, its pizza, and the dollars covering the walls.
Louie’s Backyard - Key West
Housed in a Victorian home built in 1897, Louie’s Backyard has been serving up island fare since 1971, when it opened with seating for 12 and a single waiter. The building has withstood more than a century of storms, and today The Afterdeck is a favorite cocktail spot.
Pepe’s - Key West
Established in 1909, Pepe’s is the oldest eatery in the Florida Keys and the second-oldest in Florida! Known for hearty breakfasts, fresh oysters, and Key lime pie, it was a favorite spot for President Truman.
Make these bars your very own bucket list.
There isn't one that'll disappoint. They're all funky, some are inexpensive - some are a little too 'touristy' for my tastes, but I've been to each and every one of them - have the coozies and the hats to prove it.
