A Florida man is in hot water after allegedly pulling off what might be one of the strangest thefts you’ll hear about this week - more than $600,000 worth of potatoes and onions. Jason Canals, 39, was arrested March 10th, 2026 and accused by federal prosecutors of running multiple schemes to scam wholesale produce companies out of massive shipments of vegetables.
According to investigators, Canals allegedly used a company’s name and email signature to request shipments of produce he had no authority to order. Once the trucks were rolling, prosecutors say he diverted the deliveries to locations he controlled - leaving wholesalers with the bill and a whole lot fewer taters and onions.
Prosecutors say Canals also allegedly sent fake paperwork to companies to make it look like he had already paid for the produce. In reality, investigators say the payments never existed. By the time everything was sorted out, the losses reportedly topped $600,000, including the produce and transportation costs.
Now the accused “tater bandit” faces eight federal charges of interstate transport of stolen property, each carrying up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The case is still under investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General along with the FBI.
