Nobody thought preserving them was a good idea...

Martin Scorsese made an entire, Oscar-winning movie about how important it is to preserve early silent films, but the prognosis for them is still incredibly bleak. A new study commissioned by the Library of Congress confirms that only 25% of the films produced by major American studios in the silent era still exist, and only 11% of them in their original 35 mm format.

That means that the vast majority of films produced in America before 1929 have been lost entirely, from the first-ever 3D film to a Cleopatra movie starring the original vamp, Theda Bara. When you look at the entire world it gets even worse - Scorsese’s preservation-focused Film Foundation has estimated that 90% of the world’s silent films are gone forever.

  1. Remember that big fire at Paramount(?) about 10-12 years ago? Lost who knows what. Should be alternate locations and dupes.

  2. Why would hollywood care, these films didn't teach wokeness, they weren't aligned with climitards, they didn't say boys could be girls.

  3. To be fair that old film was easily damaged, and highly flammable: dangerous stuff to keep around. However, at the time everyone considering throwing them out figured there were a hundred other copies and anyhow who would ever want to see a not-very-good movie that wasn't popular new?
