Can't talk about St. Patricks Day without talking about bars, right?

Here are three of my favorite bars, and it's not because
all three are in Ireland, but...

This bar is on Main Street in Glenties, a wee (they say wee - we say tiny) town in Donegal County, Ireland. There's almost always a small crowd of locals/regulars at the bar day and night. No loud music, no loud TV's - except when the Donegal Football (soccer to you) team is playing.
Just a good, simple neighborhood pub that's been there for 26 years now. Qiute, comfortable and friendly - a classic Irish pub if ever there was one.

This is The Crown Saloon in downtown Belfast - in the heart of the city across from the Europa Hotel. First opened in 1826, it's a tourist destination that's also a local favorite. The bar features tiny little cubbies with doors that close for privacy - they call them 'Snugs', and they're so popular you actually have to make a reservation to sit in in one. If you ever get a chance to go, ask for Michal - the 'Cask Master'  - a personal friend of ours.

...

You know I've mentioned this place once or twice before, but it's really worth talking about a bit - today especially. This is the Duke of York - one of my top five bars in all the world - at least those parts of the world I have first-hand knowledge of. You’ll find it nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area about 1/2 mile or so from City Hall, furnished with Belfast furniture and walls adorned with antique mirrors and artefacts from some of the city’s most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times.
It’s a time warp, which is why it is so well loved, and crazy busy. Step into this institution of  a bar, enjoy a local whisky or creamy ale or stout, and you’ll be treated to a glimpse of Belfast’s historical past.

Today is St. Paddy's Day. Don't you
know a nice Irish girl who'd like these?

  1. No loud music is good. Why go to socialize and not be able to hear anybody talk?

  2. I couldn't tell you where after all these years, but I spent a great week drinking in an Irish Pub somewhere near Trondheim, Norway back in the 90's.

  3. there was a tiny hole in the wall bar back in West Berlin that I love to hang out at. small, real nice folks there and they smile
when I tried to speak German to them and they speak back to me in English. had a foosball table in the back part.
food there was even good. hang out all night on Friday and only spend 20-25 bucks. found it in 1978 by accident one afternoon. had a good time there and went back later on. got to know the owner even. he got me blasted a few times
on the house. even got to know and date a few of the local girls there. like I said. a really nice spot.
