Wanna save on eats? Walmart is not your best option...

There are plenty of ways to save money on groceries, from comparing the cost per unit on similar items to shopping local. Still, it’s not a bad idea to stick to grocery chains that have been proven to have lower prices to begin with. After all, a little bit of savings every time you grocery shop can add up to big amounts over time.
Costco groceries averaged 21.4% less than Walmart in the Consumer Reports study. Aldi and Lidl were about 8% cheaper than Walmart, with WinCo and H-E-B close behind. Whole Foods was nearly 40% more expensive than Walmart, the study found.
So which grocery retailer is the cheapest in the country, compared to Walmart’s prices? The surprising answer is Costco. The study showed that groceries at Costco cost 21.4% less than Walmart on average, with another warehouse club, BJ’s Wholesale Club, coming in at a close second with prices 21% cheaper than Walmart.
Lidl and Aldi are both about 8% cheaper than Walmart and both are great for basics. Aldi fans love visiting the store to stock up on things like butter, olive oil, cheese, coffee and pasture-raised eggs. It’s also a great time to check out Lidl, if you have one nearby. I've never seen one here in the States, but they're everywhere in Europe and the UK.

The priciest grocery chain, according to the study, is Whole Foods, which comes in at nearly 40% more expensive than Walmart. Beloved grocery chains like Trader Joe’s and Publix can be expensive if you don't pay attention.

  1. worked with a guy who used to work for Walmart. he told me something unreal. when planning a super store, they look at how many EBT card holders are in that area. Walmart rakes in billions each year from EBT sales. yeah. they market to that group. got to get that federal money ! anyway, he told to just watch who goes in and what they buy. if you really want to get pissed off, see how they "pay" for it all. yup. the ones with overflowing carts filled with snacks and soda are buying it all on EBT. that was 27 or 28 years ago now. I just drive right by them anymore. there a nice local chain supermarket in this area. Weis. prices are about the same. their meats are great. a lot of the store brand goods are just as good if not better than some name brands I have tried. and they give old folks and vets 10% off 2 days a week on store brand stuff. BTW, a lot of stuff inside Walmart comes from China. like a lot of it does.
and China has bought into a lot of companies here beside buying farmland up like mad. now, you must remember one key thing about China, they hate us with a passion ! never forget that little key bit.

  2. Well, as long as glyphosate is in the food supply, for a lot of people the less "natural" and "plant-based" food is, the more immediately toxic. We all used to hear that whole-grain toast and orange juice would give us more productive mornings than Fritos and Mtn Dew, but for many the reverse is now true! So no need to blame the EBT shoppers who load up on junkfood...blame the greedheads who have been teaching millennials that apples, celery, spinach, and strawberries are toxic and that there's now such a thing as an allergy to peas.

RFK was trying to enlist farmers' sympathy and support by talking as if fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were still healthy food. Maybe at the prices he can afford to pay they still are. For the budget-conscious, they are lethal.

Wal-Mart is one store where several of the store brand items don't (usually) make me (very) sick, which puts them ahead of price competitors Save-a-Lot and Food Lion. But this article is right. Stores that market to the same demographic tend to offer the best price on A and the worst price on B in any given week. There are things I buy when I'm in Food Lion, things I buy when I'm in Wal-Mart, things I read the newspapers to see where to buy if I buy them at all. We don't have a Costco but there *are* things it's more frugal to buy from other discounters, like Dollar General Stores, that aren't primarily grocery stores but sell snacks and a very small selection of real grown-up food.
