Pinball - the scourge of our youth...

I love these 'Today in History' kinda things 'cause more often than not they point out just out stupid - and/or naive we have been about thinghs. Take this one - today in 1942, Mayor LaGuardia banned all pinball machines from New York City. Critics claimed they were luring children away from school and enticing them to steal money to play games. Pinball was considered a highway to juvenile delinquency operated by organized crime, which was taking children’s lunch money. And now, with the country at war, America shouldn’t use its precious resources on more machines.
Under the new law, police seized 2,000 machines from bars, hotels, candy stores, and bowling alleys. They were destroyed with sledge hammers and dumped in the waters off of Long Island. Other major cities like Los Angeles and Chicago followed New York’s example.
These early machines had no controls that gave players a way of controlling the path of the ball. Later machines included electric flippers and bumpers, which enabled players to keep the ball in play. The bans were lifted when courts decided that pinball was now a game skill instead of strictly a game of chance.
