I'm surprised they haven't called Trump this yet...

Charlie Chaplin’s decision to finance 'The Great Dictator' himself in 1940 was one of the boldest acts of artistic defiance in Hollywood history. At the time, major studios were deeply entangled in the German market, which was one of the most profitable foreign territories for American films.
The Nazi government made it clear that any studio producing anti‑Hitler content would see its films banned across Germany and much of Europe. Terrified of losing revenue, studios refused to back Chaplin’s project, warning him that mocking Hitler, especially while the United States was still officially neutral was too dangerous, too political, and too financially risky.
Chaplin ignored every warning. He poured his own money into the film, using his personal fortune to cover production, sets, and distribution. He believed that satire could expose the absurdity and cruelty of fascism at a moment when many world leaders were still trying to appease Hitler.
What made his stance even more striking was that Chaplin began developing the film before the full scale of Nazi atrocities was widely known; he was responding to the rise of authoritarianism, censorship, and persecution that others in Hollywood preferred not to acknowledge. His willingness to risk his career and potentially his safety, set him apart from an industry that largely chose silence.

When 'The Great Dictator' premiered, it became both a commercial success and a cultural turning point. Chaplin’s final speech, a direct plea for humanity and democracy, resonated far beyond the screen, marking one of the earliest major Hollywood condemnations of fascism.

  1. Why are you surprised? Do you think Trump fits the description?
Can anything that Trump has done since getting into politics be construed as the acts of a dictator?
