Whenever we talk about the loss - or lack - of basic skills in today's kids, this is always at the top of the list. In their all-digital, facetime, handheld world, wanna fuck with their heads? If they ask yo what time it is, don't go military on 'em - they might actually ge that. No, tell 'em it's quarter past ten and watch their brains explode. This whole in-school phone ban is gonna be fun to watch.
Oh, a watch? Forget it. None of 'em even know what one is...

Teachers are surprised their students can't read a clock?
ReplyDeleteTHE HUMANITY!
Maybe those kids should find some TEACHERS to TEACH them that instead of teaching them the daily list of newly discovered pronouns?
Government monopoly day prisons masquerading as schools are not designed to educate. The greater issue with analog clocks is the impact understanding fractions, multiples of 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. Pathetic that most don't appreciate any of that.
ReplyDeleteTeaching pronouns is not just a waste of time, but child abuse.
ReplyDeleteTeaching how to read an analog clock? Other than phrases like "turn it clockwise" become obsolete, is there really a life skill need there? How many kids growing up in the 50s or later know how to read a sundial? How about how to position and calibrate a sundial? When was the last time you needed to write out a check? I only need checks for annual property taxes.
Of course, I think woodshop, metal shop, and home ec should make a comeback.
Sundials don't help teach fractions, or much of anything beyond sun position and time. If you can't extrapolate other utility in analog clocks, then spend more time thinking about all of the ways in which you reference them. It is way more than time.
DeleteGo to YouTube and watch the multitude of videos where college kids can't answer basic questions....... Then you'll understand how useless government education is...
