Here in Florida, we ain't got a snowballs chance in hell - or do we?

After a historic winter blast that shattered snowfall records along the Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle in early 2025, the Florida Department of Transportation says it has enhanced its response efforts should another winter storm strike.
Even though hurricanes, heavy rainfall, flooding and heat waves are far more common across the Sunshine State, FDOT officials say the agency takes an “expect the unexpected” approach to all weather scenarios, including snowstorms. New this winter, the department says it has purchased an additional 10 heavy truck-mounted snowplows, 10 dump truck-mounted snowplows and dozens of other pieces of necessary equipment to respond to the threat of frozen precipitation.

The state has always maintained a limited amount snow-removal equipment compared to northern states, but officials say the January blizzard highlighted the need for additional resources. “FDOT’s mission is clear: Keep Florida moving safely, no matter the challenge,” an agency spokesperson stated.
Let me say, unequivocally, that I did not move here for this shit...

  1. We received 2-4" in Charleston, Beaufort & Colleton Counties. Roads were deserted. Drove US 17 south to our Beaufort house from Charleston. Stopped in town to eat lunch. Was asked "any problems" several times. Nope. I lived 3,600' above sea level in Blowing Rock, NC for 35 years. You never know when you'll need 4WD. Cold snap here Monday, 42º H, 25º L. That's 20º below normal. But back to normal rest of next week.

As a child in Jackson, MS, 0.5" of snow was a disaster. This was back in the 50s-70s. Zero 4WD, unless you had an old Willys Wagon.

  2. Warmed up 40 degrees to 0 & we got 10 inches of new snow overnight. Managed to get my road cleared with my blower in a few hours. Supposed to go back to normal and be -35 again by Saturday morning.

  3. 11" at the house here in Pensacola. The quietness from no traffic was surreal.
