This is what M&A does to small communities...

First, ALDI bought WINN-DIXIE outright. Then they squirreled away the store locations they wanted to keep and convert in to ALDI stores, and later sold a majority of the (remaining) stores to a consortium of private investors, including C&S Wholesale Grocers. They, in turn, are now closing those stores that are deemed 'marginal. It's a huge loss for us here in Lady Lake for two reasons. WD ran great two-fers, and their meat was first rate. The upside is we get bigger, better ALDI stores.
I've now shopped in ALDI stores in five different contries, and I am a convert on everything but their meats - specifically beef and pork. All that aside, where stores are closing their doors completely is mainly in rural Alabama and Louisiana. Residents there are looking at possible, temporary food challenges in accessing fresh food and traditional grocery services.
I do buy bulk items like pastas, TP's and paper towels fom Amazon - the free delivery is the deal maker for me. Have you tried it? Take a look.

  1. When we moved to Alabama we went looking for new Grocery stores, the Winn - Dixie was in the real bad place, pulled my firearm in the parking lot just getting out the car. Now we have Publix & Rouses won't miss WD.

  2. The Winn Dixie here (north Florida) is being converted to an Aldi. But a group has gotten together to reopen/relocate some stores. So thankfully, we will have a W-D in the Hitchcock's grocery store across town that is closing.

  3. My problem with ALDI is the way they expect their cashiers to operate. They are very understaffed, and they push the cashiers to go as fast as they can. The result is that they don't take time to be careful with delicate produce. After a couple times of having a bag of avocados or pears slammed into the bottom of the shopping cart, then a couple cans of soup dropped on top of them, we quit going to ALDI.
